Rudeness & Disrespect

Rudeness & Disrespect

The new generation of kids do not learn respect and politeness in the way we learnt in the past.

In fact, I would say that many show disrespect and rudeness to their parents. And the main root of the issue lies with the parents.

When one parent fails to stand on the same page to correct disrespect and rudeness shown by the child, the child continues to believe that he/she can be disrespectful and rude to the parents and other authority figures.

More often than not, when a child demonstrates rudeness or disrespect towards one parent, the other parent focuses on the parent's behaviour that might have led to the child's response. This should be done separately and privately.

ChatGPT has a clear understanding on this issue and is wise to say the following:

"𝐀𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝'𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐚𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭'𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲. 𝐃𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝'𝐬 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠."

This is the unspoken rule in parenting. Both parents MUST be on the same page to deal with disrespect and rudeness of the child on the spot. The rest can come in later.

Having worked with young people for many years, I believe this is the single most important rule within the household. This cultivates the child to understand this ------- he/she must always respect his/her parents.

The new generation of kids do not need to be 'friend-friend' with their parents. They need their parents to impart the value of respect as they observe them standing united as one to correct disrespect and rudeness consistently.
